Snacks: Children of Men, Friday Night Lights, Finger Eleven, and Kristin Chenowith on B'way!

Every week I watch a LOT of TV, commute to work and workout to many MANY songs, and as often as possible I try to take in a movie or break the bank with a real live theatrical performance - maybe even BROADWAY! Well, this has been a big week already and I'm so full of my Artistic Snacks, it's time for a little regurgitation....so here's what I've done...

...movie: Children of Men
An intense movie with Clive Owen and Julianne Moore and other talented people who deserve recognition (they get it here). Without giving away the ending, for what seems to be a hope for change this movie is not very happy. It's apocalyptic world view feels realistic, scary and something none of us would probably survive. It's making a lot of '07 Top lists and even got Oscar buzz, although not a nomination. Not sure about that, but it was a cool movie - I recommend making plans to go shopping afterwards as a little pick-you up.

...television: Friday Night Lights
I am one episode behind, after tonight, it'll be two, but I have 'em stored on the DVR and I can't wait. FNL is OC-like in the sense that it tells the stories of high schoolers and their folks, but this show captured my attention and my heart like nothing on TV has since I saw Grey's Anatomy's series premiere 2 years ago. For the time being NBC.com is airing every single episode online for free, they also have two minute recaps if you're on a time budget or just start watching tonight! It's good television...and the football story lines are so human that you don't even realize it's sports...unless that's what you want, then watch for the football. And the sex. Just watch it.

...music: Paralyzer, Finger Eleven
I first heard of Finger Eleven when I was working at the radio station WPGU in college but they didn't stick with me until their single One Thing a beautiful rock ballad. Now, the band, who I've Wiki-learned is from Canada, has a new single Paralyzer and it is sexy good. I love this lead singer's voice. And those lyrics... It's about a guy standing at a bar drinking (and that's not the only reason I relate to it). He sees a woman he thinks is beautiful and she just looks right through him and he just wants to kiss her and be with her - now who hasn't been there? A little harmless across-the-bar fantasizing?
"I hold out for one more drink, before I think 'I'm looking too desperately'..."

...theater: The Apple Tree
This Broadway show, playing at Studio 54, is a ridiculous musical telling three stories (relatively unrelated), consecutively in three parts. The show is...hmmmm...but the actors do their all to make it work. And they succeed - for the first act, at least (a cute three person story about Adam & Eve..and men & women). The second act was one of the most pointless things I've ever seen. I don't even want to tell you more about it. Kristin Chenoweth is a (here I gay...) a musical theater comic genius. We did have great seats and the performances are excellent, but don't feel bad about leaving this one at half time, I know wouldn't have.

Coming up this week on my calendar:
...back to Broadway with the well-received Spring Awakening
...and at PS122 - Julie Atlas Muz's new show: Divine Comedy of an Exquisite Corpse
