Grey Gardens: A show without it's star

Maybe the hype is in the name above the title on the marquee.

Maybe I'm so used to seeing a show I love that was staged not to feature a single star performer (
Spring Awakening, anyone?).

Maybe it was siting in the next to last row of the mezzanine and I'm a seat snob.

Maybe, I'm just right about this.

But,
Grey Gardens, SANS CHRISTINE EBERSOLE, left a little more than something to be desired.

I wanted to like it. I told my friends, hesitantly, after the show that I thought it was good. But, Bryan stepped up and said he didn't care for it. And, I had heard so many good things about the show that I didn't let myself go there.

Although the performances were strong, I thought, it's overall production value seemed inconsistent and I'm just. not. sure. There were some lol moments, but...can somebody help me out here? What's making this show so loved and a favorite for a Tony?
Thanks to Playbill.

I think the thing that was bugging me the most after the show was that before we bought the tickets I called my friend Alan who had just seen the show the week before to get his advice on seeing it without Christine (and just seeing it period). He said "yes" and "yes". He should have said, "no" and "you need to watch the documentary first so you can appreciate what they are recreating". Sitting through songs that aren't that great and some voices that aren't that pretty requires a love that just wasn't there. I would see it again, but only with Christine. And I can't wait to see the movie.
